Site #18?

 This is another of the Nakagawa 88 sites. However, the sign that is above the altar has fallen apart and the lower half is missing. My guess is that this is Site #18 but I will not be sure until I can find a map with the sites indicated and named.

 These are the three stelae on the left. The front one has a person's name on it but I have no idea who he might be. The little cube with the hole in it is interesting but again no explanation was forthcoming. Notice the offering of four bottles of drinks and the green branches on either side. The stele in the middle seems to have a Buddha carved into and the back one has some warn lettering.

Looking in through the window in the altar door, I found this statue. It probably represents a man who was famous for promoting Buddhism in some way. Notice the halo, a feature that is quite common on Buddhist statues.

Still at the shrine

 This is a place to purify yourself before participating in any activity related to the shrine. Purification is very important in Shinto and shrines, except very small ones, always have a place with water.

 I think this stele may honor war dead but I was not sure. The characters were clear but there were enough that I did not know that I could not be sure I understood.

As I left the shrine grounds and start toward my next goal, a temple, I realized that I could see the Shinkansen tracks in the hills in the background. The two red arrows are for bicyclists and pedestrians. There are no lights in the area so at night it would be easy to end up in the middle of the rice paddy.

Hachiryu Jinja

 This is the area in front of the main altar.

 The altar in the side building was completely closed so there was nothing to see.

This is the one of the monsters that sit on the four corners of the roof, protecting it from evil.

Stelae and trees

 This is off in a corner of the grounds. I am not sure what it is supposed to be. It almost looks like a boat.

 There is writing on this but it was too worn to decipher.
