Earthquake Diary 87

I was surprised to find a crew working around the outside of Seiyu, the next door supermarket. Although the best information that we have indicates that Seiyu will not reopen, we are getting a few hints that this might be wrong. Seiyu is less than two minutes door-to-door, but the next nearest supermarket is a 20 minute walk. It would be nice if it does begin business again.
This is the entrance hall to my building. It consists of three parts. The middle part, here in the upper right, did not change position relative to the building itself. However, the part that contains the entrance to our stairwell (in the foreground here), moved appreciably during the main quake and the more powerful aftershocks. This section is now about 10 centimeters closer to the building than it was. Also the end behind me is lower than this end, and the left side in the picture is lower than the right side. It is very strange, disorienting, to walk on.
This is the base of the tower that supports the high tension electric lines. Just after the quake it was checked and then a crew came and repaired the cracks. These repairs are a lighter color than the old concrete of the original construction. If you look carefully you can see that the left side of the repair that goes from the foreground to the tower has cracked again on the left side of the patch.
In one of my early posts, I showed the collapsed wall in front of this house. You can still see the remains of that wall. Now the owner has brought in a few truck loads of dirt to eventually fix the yard.
This has nothing to do with the tremors. Instead, it illustrates how our structures soon return to Nature, even without a lot of shaking.
This two story apartment house is getting worse after every aftershock. In addition to the doors, a section of the wall is cracked and ready to fall off.
