The pilgrims furthest inside are chanting and those nearest are getting ready to chant. This is the primary entrance to the main hall.

The town and ocean from the viewing platform in the gate between the tower and the next lower level. The castle from pictures a couple of days ago is on the top of the hill on the right. Our hotel is the whitish building on the distance on the left.
Putting ropes around trees is usually a Shinto practice, but the two religions often get mixed together. Frequently the Buddhist priests will take care of the local Shinto shrines if, as often is the case with small shrines, there is no Shinto priest in the area.
