Oushuu33Kannon Temples 6-7 Part 2
The temple grounds were wooded with meandering paved paths. As usual I do not know who is represented in the statue but I liked it very much.
The next picture shows the main access path into the temple complex. The far end reaches the main road through the town and is separated from the ocean only by the width of the road.
All of a sudden, through the trees, we saw a towering pillar. To my untrained eye, the style look like some thing from the late 1800s or early 1900s.
We walked over to it and a close examination revealed that it was a monument dedicated to the 100th anniversary of railroads in Japan. On each side of the central pillar there was a pair of wheels from an engine.
This is the plaque that explains the purpose of the monument. We were a bit surprised to find this sort of thing on the temple grounds, since it actually has nothing to do with Buddhism.
