Carrying the bag tells everyone you are an Ohenro san. You see many different combinations, from complex to simple, but almost everyone has a bag.

My bag of Buddist Things
The white thing with writing is a bag for carrying the other stuff. The orange thing on the left is the book in which I get stamps and calligraph at each temple. The white things on the book are slips of paper I recieve at each temple. The slips show the Buddha worshipped there. The yellow box contains insence and the blue candles. The dark red book contains the Heart Sutra.

I can see "Dogyoninin" on the white one. It means your are walking with kobotaishi, right?
