Shinran

Shinran was a Buddhist monk who traveled to China and brought back the Pure Land, Jodo, branch of Buddhism to Japan. Pure Land refers to a sort of Buddhist heaven and the teaching is that my meaningfully reciting a mantra, even once, you will go to the Pure Land. It was a way of circumventing the years of training in a monastery that was generally accepted as required for advancement on the Buddhist path. In this sense it was a populist movement.
Here is a close up of how Shinran is thought to have looked.
Hidden in a corner of  the grounds was this pagoda.
