Turning around, across the street I could see the torii and the shrine building of this Hachimangu. Hachiman is one of the most important Shinto gods and he even became a Buddhist Bodhisattva during the period when there was a movement toward consolidating the two religions.
This is the main shrine building. I was very surprised to see a fence around it. Well, not so much the fence, many shrines and temples are protected by fences, but this one has three strands of outwardly facing barbed wire on top of the fence.
Just inside the grounds was a place to purify yourself before approaching the shrine.
