The graveyard across the street

 After walking to the nearest intersection and back, I was across the street from the entrance to Hachimangu. This road did not go directly to the place I wanted to visit, but since it was the only road in that direction, I took it.

 After a short walk through the woods, I found myself on a low cliff overlooking the graveyard. Since there was nothing there but gravestones, I decided not to try to find a way down to it. Instead, I went back to the road and continued my walk.

A little further up the road, I found this pleasant little pond.
