The down staircase leads to a pretty good Italian restaurant. There was a better one in the area but the owner closed because he was getting bored. He went to Italy and Spain to study for half a year or more and then planned to open a new restaurant. He should have returned a couple of years ago but we have not been able to determine what happened to him.
Monks chanting sutras is not a very common sight these day, but every once in a while you will see one. He is holding a small bowl and, if you drop a coin in it (even one yen will do), he will stop chanting and offer you a pray before beginning again.
This is a tea shop. It sells all sorts of green tea and the equipment for making it. I like to walk by here because it smells so good.
