This is the bridge that I was standing on when I took the last picture in the last posting. The sign says, " Welcome to Akiu". The center of town, such as it is, is across the bridge. There are more hotels and a few stores. The object on the left is an old box car that has had its wheels removed.
I was fascinated by the colors and shapes on the rusted portions of the car. I hope to use them in a picture some day. This is a private house on the other side of the road. Notice the round window, the two layer roof, and the solar panels. If you have solar panels and generate more electricity than you can use, the power company must buy it from you at about twice the price you pay when you buy.
In farming areas, many yards look like this. Piles of unused equipment and tools, things that will not be used until later in the year or even until next year, and lots of just plain junk which will cost a lot of money if you take it to the dump.
Flowers will grown anywhere.
This is the garden in a private home. The multi-story pagoda may be there as a religious statement or just as an ornament. The Japanese are generally very casual about this sort of thing, whereas I can not image a non-Catholic American displaying a statue of the Virgin Mary, for instance.
